In 1071, the Byzantine Empire decided to put a decisive end to the constant attacks that their Anatolian territories had to face from Turkic raiders. Standing across the battlefield this time were the Seljuk Turks, Central Asian steppe warriors who were invigorated by their acceptance of Islam and the capable usage of their horse archers.
