Welcome back. Today is a video I was really excited to share with you. We will be focusing on the Iranian Empire, also known as the Sassanid Empire, which occupied large portions of the Middle East before the Islamic Conquest of the 7th and 8th Centuries. • One of the most recognizable structures of the Sassanid Empire is the Great Arch of Ctesiphon, in modern day Iraq. This great arch has a mysterious history behind it, but is noted as being considered the first, and for centuries, the largest, vaulted archway in the world. This arch is often associated with the Great King Khosrow I. • We will look through the oldest known 19th century and early 20th century photographs and artistic depictions of the Great Arch of Ctesiphon, while briefly discussing the history of Khosrow, The Sassanid Empire, and the architecture of the Middle East. • We will also look at a few photographs (extremely rare) of the Arch of Ctesiphon BEFORE the massive walls collapsed during the Great Flood of 1888. These few images will be from the 1860’s and 1870’s. Enjoy!
