Structure • The structure of the past perfect tense is: • Subject + had + past participle (V3) • Examples: • I had eaten dinner before you called. • She had finished her homework when her friend arrived. • 2. When to Use It • We use the past perfect tense to talk about an action that happened before another action in the past. • First action (past perfect) + Second action (simple past) • Example: I had finished my work before the meeting started. (First: I finished my work. Second: The meeting started.) • It shows the order of events clearly. • 3. Helping Verb Had • Had is used with all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they). • Example: They had left before the show started. • 4. Common Time Expressions • Some common time expressions used with the past perfect are: • Before Example: She had cooked dinner before her parents arrived. • After Example: They had left after the party ended. • By the time Example: By the time I arrived, they had already eaten. • 5.
