Heatmaps are very handy tools for the analysis and visualization of large multi-dimensional datasets. It is often used with high-throughput gene expression data. If you want to locate hidden groups among analyzed genes, or association between experimental conditions and gene expression patterns, heatmaps are the way to go because they bring together the statistical rigor of clustering with the visual cognitive excellence of your mind. In this crash course from Bioinformatics Academy you can learn the important tricks how to apply this tool successfully in your projects. • The animation part in this video is prepared using PowTool beta software: http://www.powtoon.com/ • The video contains the following material licensed under different Creative Commons licences: • 1950s chair fabric by Mr Thinktank • http://www.flickr.com/photos/tahini/4... • CC BY 2.0 • Air Hockey Saloon (by Chris Zabriskie) • http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Chr... • CC BY 3.0 • AV-0101-5194 Dr. Jason Kang, NCI (Lance Miller) • http://www.flickr.com/photos/36128932... • CC BY-SA 2.0 • Illumina Gene Sequencing machine • http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil... • from Wikimedia Commons • by Jon Callas from San Jose, USA • Two Affymetrix chips • http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil... • from Wikimedia Commons • CC BY-SA 3.0 • Gene expression heatmap by Libertas Academica • http://www.flickr.com/photos/libertas... • CC BY 2.0 • Amount of sunlight by Robson# • http://www.flickr.com/photos/_robson_... • CC BY 2.0 • iCal heat maps in Lion by morebyless • http://www.flickr.com/photos/morebyle... • CC BY 2.0 • Toilets mapped on OSM in Great Britain by SK53 OSM • http://www.flickr.com/photos/sk53_osm... • CC BY-SA 2.0
