Despite being severely polluted, they flock to the ghats every morning to bathe in the river, make offerings to it, and even drink from it. I took a boat ride on the Ganges at dawn in Varanasi, India, to witness the joy of worshipers at the ghats, many of whom have saved for years to make the trip.
