In recent months Nintendo has sued several popular video game emulation and rom sites over copyright infringement (some despite having already removed Nintendo IPs from their sites). But while it is Nintendo's legal obligation to protect their intellectual property, the sites that close out of fear of legal prosecution may be playing a vital role in video game preservation. Old, more obscure games and abandonware titles are susceptible to being lost. Meanwhile, some of the game companies that defend their IPs sometimes do more harm than good.
