(26 Jul 1996) Natural Sound • • Accompanied by the first lady and daughter Chelsea, President Clinton has made his second trip to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. • • The Clintons greeted members of the U-S women's gymnastics team, congratulated Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva on her win, and watched a series of swimming championships. • • The athletics came as light relief after a day spent consoling the relatives of those who died in the T-W-A flight 800 air crash last week. • • President Clinton and his family arrived in Atlanta, Thursday to sample the 1996 Olympics. • • The visit to the games came just hours after they'd spent time consoling the families of T-W-A crash victims in New York. • • The presidential motorcade rode across Atlanta to the Georgia Tech Aquatic Centre, where the president, first lady and Chelsea watched a long series of swimming championships. • • The Clintons shook hands with members of the audience seated around them, including Michelle Smith, the Irish swimmer who has won three gold medals. • • In the Gerogia Dome, they had front-row seats for the all-around women's gymnastics title. • • Problems with their floor routines kept the American women from living up to their gold medal team performance of Tuesday night. • • Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva won the title, with three Romanians finishing second and tied for third. • • The president offered his congratulations after the events in person. • • He also met the seven American team members and their coaches. • • Together, they posed for team and individual photographs, including a handshake photo with Kerri Strug. • • Strug performed her second vault while injured at the end of the U-S women's gold- winning team performance Tuesday. • • She wore a white plastic brace on her leg. • • It was Clinton's second visit to the Olympics in a week.
