Ferde Grofé (1892-1972) was an American composer and arranger. He was probably better known for the latter, given his role in 1924 of arranging Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. He worked for more than a decade as Whiteman's arranger. He also contributed to scores of motion pictures, radio, and TV orchestras The Grand Canyon Suite is his best known orchestral composition. It was tremendously popular work when it came out, in part due to its sound - which was like Gershwin bridged classical music and popular music of the day. As can be heard on this particular recording, many portions have echoes of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra and some Gershwin-esque elements (although the finale seems slightly Wagnerian in ambition!). It is an enjoyable composition, even if at time it feels a little thin in comparison to more traditional orchestral works. • Movements/Tracks: • 00:00 Sunrise • 05:23 Painted Desert • 10:28 On The Trail • 19:00 Sunset • 23:58 Cloudburst • Details: • Album title: Ferde Grofé.
