Watch as Parents Magazine explains these baby care basics! As if newborn care wasn't already a lot to handle, premature babies require extra care during their first few months of life. Most preemie babies spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit, or the NICU. Because their lungs aren't fully developed, many premature babies have breathing problems that require extra oxygen or a ventilator. Apnea is a temporary pause in breathing, which is carefully monitored in the NICU. Because these tiny babies have less body fat, they may need the help of an incubator to help control body temperature. A feeding tube may be put in place until your baby can suck effectively, but nurses can still giver her any breast milk that you pump. Premature babies can experience delays in baby milestones or even learning disabilities, so regular checkups are essential. Early intervention, such as physical therapy or speech therapy, can make a big difference. Your health care professional should answer any of your questions, so ask as many times as you need to.
