Initially conceived circa 1970 by the Shaw of Iran (a major Mercedes shareholder at the time) and put through the rigors of a true military vehicle for a year in the Artic Circle and Sahara Desert. 3 locking differentials, 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive -low and plenty of V8 muscle make this the ultimate getaway car when the getaway is off the beaten path. • The 2006 G500 Gelandewagen is a Grand Edition because all 2006 models are Grand Editions. Mercedes thought they would discontinue the line in 2005 so they came out with a limited run final model. But then they built it one more year, and one more and one more.
