Dysphagia -- a swallowing disorder -- is a common symptom for persons with myotonic dystrophy (DM), affecting over half of those registered in the Myotonic Dystrophy Family Registry. It is caused by skeletal anomalies or weakness in the face or head, or by weakness and myotonia of the face, tongue, jaw, esophagus, and throat muscles. This webinar presentation covered the signs and symptoms of dysphagia in persons with DM, how various muscles are affected, and some of the treatment options available. • Want more information on DM?: http://www.myotonic.org • Newly Diagnosed?
