Hi, my name is Otto and boy do I have a story for you. You may remember me from a previous email where I told you the beginning of my tale of survival. I have had a pretty tough start to life, from being found emaciated as an orphaned kitten to surviving feline distemper, and now finding out that I have a rare congenital abnormality. • Receiving my diagnosis was a journey that consisted of multiple medical diagnostic testing including 2 Barium Swallow Tests, CT Scans and X-rays. Finally, an esophagram (x-ray of the esophagus) and fluoroscopy (a moving e-ray) diagnosed me with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA). The doctor explained to me that PRAA is a congenital abnormality of my heart's blood vessels, which has resulted in my esophagus being compressed at the base of the heart. This prevents solid food from being able to pass properly, and because food is not moved properly through my esophagus, regurgitation occurs. In order to correct this, I need surgery. • Here I am now, 1 year old and in need of a very expensive surgery that can only be done by a specialist. Until I have surgery, I must continue to remain on a liquid diet. My amazing foster mom purees and strains all of my meals to remove any lumps. Even a lump the size of a pin head will cause me to gag. Then my “food” is put in a special bowl that allows me to remain upright while eating. I get 4 meals a day (5 hours apart), to give the “food” time to move through my esophagus to my stomach. Any less time and I will regurgitate and gag uncontrollably, while foaming at the mouth. When this happens, there is nothing that can be done to help me in the moment other than my foster mom holding me upright and telling me all will be OK. I know when it happens it breaks my foster mom’s heart. • Good news is that I am moving closer to a surgery date and my foster family has agreed to pay for half of my surgery. NAHS is hopeful to raise as much as possible to cover the other half, which is about $5,000. • Thank you for reading my story. • XO, Otto ❤️ • ___________________________ • From Otto’s foster mom ~ “When you first meet Otto, all you see is a normal, very sweet, petite happy little kitty with golden eyes that will melt your heart and the cutest white toes on his back paws. He’s a little boy who loves to be held and is happy to curl up on your lap and nap with you. He is even known to crawl under the covers, lay his head on the pillow and nap. He loves playing with string toys and chasing the red laser light. Otto is a very smart kitty. He knows “down” and “no” but chooses when he wants to obey them and will whine when he doesn’t get his way. He is initially timid in a new environment and meeting new people. Once he is comfortable he will enjoy being held/carried. He likes to be held over your shoulder so he can stretch out and see what is happening around him. Carrying him this way also helps with his digestion. • • Otto looks forward to the day he can enjoy the pure taste of pate and can eat dry food, grazing on it throughout the day when his hunger strikes. He dreams too of finding his forever home with hopefully a fur sibling he can birdwatch and sunbathe with and plenty of warm laps to which to nap.” • Donate today at: https://give-usa.keela.co/otto-medica...
