What's the quickest way to touch off an argument among diehard double-action revolver fans? Just ask 'em which .357 Magnum revolver is better, the Colt Python or the Smith Wesson Model 27... then duck before the sparks fly. Today, Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford gives us an even-handed overview of these two iconic wheelguns. The Model 27 is the direct descendant of the first .357 Magnum revolver, the Smith Wesson Registered Magnum from the 1930s. It was the TOTL, their flagship revolver. Colt introduced the Python in 1955 to go head-to-head with the Model 27. It was hand-fitted, hand-tuned, and hand-polished to a gorgeous luster. Both have wonderfully smooth triggers. The Python's single-action pull is slightly better, while the Model 27 gets the edge in the double-action department. The Smith is easier to work on; you can swap in replacement parts straight from the factory, and the gun will continue to run smoothly. The Colt? It needs the sure and steady hand of a salty dawg to hand-fit replacement parts properly. If you pound a LOT of full-house .357 Magnum loads through the Python, it will go out of time. The Model 27 will handle as many .357 rounds as your hand can handle and keep running without a hiccup. Which one do you think is better? Let us know in the comments.
