Shock. Revolution. Milestone. Turmoil, outrage, enthusiastic crowds. This is how it used to be, when great classics in music celebrated their premiere. When composers knew while writing: this is gonna be a hit! • Sometimes, these were simply a few melodies composed for a friend, like in Pictures of an exhibition by Modest Mussorgski. Half a century after his death, they would become a global success. • In 1873 the painter Viktor Hartmann, who was good friends with Mussorgski, died. A year later, a commemorative exhibition in honor of Hartmann took place in St. Petersburg. Ten of these paintings inspired Mussorgski. He composed Pictures of an exhibition , a musical tour through the exhibition, a promenade, as the first piece is called in the cycle: the music has a clear program, it IS pure program music . • Mussorgski said: Art is a means of communication, not a goal in itself. • Hartmann’s paintings talked to Mussorgski, he wanted to pass this message on to the public in his language: the music. He chose the piano to do so. In this version, it was widely unknown to the great public, but due to its tonal quality, many other composers were fascinated by it. Like Maurice Ravel, 40 years later, who was already fascinated by Mussorgski during his years of study. • Arranged by him, this came into existence… • Ravel used heavy brass instruments for a big, majestic sound – often perceived as typical Russian, whereas in parts, where one is reminded of the warm and dark vocals of the Orthodox Church, he utilizes woodwinds. This musical illustration of the paintings gain a lot of liveliness in his orchestral arrangement. • Little chicks chirp and beep, surrounded by ducks quacking and hens cackling. This appears very vivid. • Mussorgski’s composition combinded with Ravel’s instrumentation finally completed the Pictures of an exhibition . The musical work was a triumph! First at the premiere 1922 in Paris and shortly after that worldwide. • Presenter: Maximilian Maier • Producer: Michael Wende (http://wendevarga.wixsite.com/wendevarga) • Orchestra: Münchner Philharmoniker • Conductor: Valery Gergiev • © Bayerischer Rundfunk • --------- • klassik shorts , presented by Maximilian Maier, is a three-minute video format that makes you want to listen to great symphonic works and presents information such as Fun Facts in an entertaining way. • Director Michael Wende supports this pointed style of explaining classical music with video excerpts of central moments of the respective work, but primarily with his unique graphic representations and sound effects. • ---------- • Social Media • ► Facebook:   / brklassik   • ► Twitter:   / br_klassik   • ► Instagram:   / neugierigaufmusik   • ► Website: https://www.br-klassik.de
