The protagonist Kratos, a Spartan warrior who serves the Olympian gods, is controlled by the player. The goddess Athena assigns Kratos the mission of assassinating Ares, the God of War and former mentor who duped Kratos into murdering his wife and daughter. Ares is the God of War.
