Previous studies had indicated undesirable outcomes of this measure, but a new, comprehensive analysis confirms that the warnings scared people away from treatment, resulting in more untreated depression and an increase in deaths from suicide. • Prescribers and patients need to be aware of the risks that medications pose, but this should be in the context of the costs of not treating a condition. The FDA should correct their actions, and downgrade their warnings. • Even in the era of close cooperation between the pharmaceutical industry, academic medicine, and federal regulators, the FDA pushed back against the industry to try to protect the public.
