After years of riding singlespeed bikes with a variety of cogs, spacers, and cassette lockrings, I decided it was time to try the Gear Clamp system. My hope was to find a great solution that would allow me to quickly change cogs before a singlespeed mountain bike race or during a bikepacking trip where a long climb or long flat section might leave me desiring just a slight change in gearing. I am very glad to easily change cogs without the cassette lock ring tool nor chain whip! • Watch the entire video to hear my thoughts and full review of the Gear Clamp system. I share why I really like it and where my expectations were probably a little higher than maybe they should have been. • MSRP: $29.95 • Two clamps on your freehub allow for a lighter weight single speed conversion. A 2.5mm allen bolt on each clamp allows fast, even trailside, gear swaps and chainline adjustment. 18 grams per pair. If using 15t Cogs or smaller, install two cassette spacers between the clamp and the cog. Use clamps with 16t Cogs and larger. Cassette Body Type: Shimano 9/10/SRAM. • More information is available at • www.GearClamp.com • In the video, we show how the Gear Clamp height limits how tall the cogs need to be in order to clear the bolts and clamp material. Gear Clamp claims 15t or smaller need cassette spacers to run them, but I had issues keeping my chain on during my race with a high quality 16t aluminum cog at higher cadences of about 120 RPM. Other variables were definitely at play, which I mention in yhe video. When I switched to a different 16t steel cog, I had no issues. The 16t steel cog was just a little taller than the aluminum cog which obviously would help. If the cog seems close in height to the Gear Clamp bolt area, I highly recommend using a cassette spacer on each side of the cog to prevent potential any issues.
