Bohm (1844-1920) was an eminent German composer of salon music, and a 'cash cow' for his publisher Simrock, who apparently used the profits on his pieces to finance publication of works by Brahms. This piece appeared in an American edition in 1908 under the title 'Mandolin Serenade' - presumably because the mandolin was a favoured instrument in the target middle-class parlour market. However, this serenade (with its echo of a theme from 'Die Fledermaus') is a highly effective piano evocation of German Alpine zither music (eg, as recorded on the CD 'Alpenländische Zitherklänge', which has a different piece with the same title.
