(16 Nov 1996) English/Nat • • In a sudden exodus up to 400-thousand Rwandan Hutu refugees headed homeward after escaping Hutu militants in Zaire. • • Carrying all they own, waves of refugees moved slowly and steadily from eastern Zaire to Rwanda. • • On Friday, before they could leave the refugee camp at Mugunga in Zaire, at least 30 Hutu refugees were massacred. • • In a desperate attempt to end the atrocities, the U-N Security Council has authorised a multinational force to help a million Rwandan refugees. • • Streaming across the border from Zaire to Rwanda, these refugees are heading homewards. • • Escaping militants these Rwandan Hutu refugees crossed the Zaire/Rwandan border on Saturday into Gisenyi. • • Up to 400-thousand refugees have made their way to the border. This may alleviate central Africa's refugee crisis and ease the work of foreign relief troops. • • Balancing meagre belongings on their heads, carrying babies on their backs, waves of refugees moved slowly and steadily in a 25-mile (40-kilometre) column. • • The refugees, however, still faced the dangers of disease and violence. • • Aid workers are working around the clock to look after the injured and sick. • • This orphanage has some 400 children to look after. • • Some parents come looking for their lost children - but for many they will never see their parents again. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • We're trying to find lost children, children who've lost their parents, we've got about 400 so far, there's probably going to be hundreds more today that come through. • SUPERCAPTION: American aid worker, Elizabeth Wiseman of Food For the Hungry, (American Christian organisation) • • On Friday, the U-N Security Council authorised an international force to bring food and medicine to those still stranded in eastern Zaire. • • The resolution was adopted unanimously. • • The 15-member body approved deployment of a multinational force until March 31 to bring aid to the refugees. • • This comes despite Rwanda's claims it was no longer necessary because the refugees were returning. • • While the council was putting the finishing touches on the document Rwandans from the Hutu refugee camp at Mugunga also started leaving • • Others weren't so lucky. • • At least 30 people were killed at the camp on Friday reportedly by Tutsi rebels. • • In recent weeks Mugunga had swelled to become the largest refugee camp in the world. • • Reporters in Mugunga saw the bodies of 30 slain women and children lying in a twisted heap. • • A survivor said a Zairian rebel soldier tossed a grenade into the huddled crowd, ignoring the victims' pleas for mercy. • • The World Health Organisation has confirmed that cholera had struck some refugees in Goma.
