The Kalmar Union was a personal union that from 1397 to 1523 joined under a single monarch the three kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden (then including parts of Finland), and Norway, together with Norway's overseas dependencies (then including Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Northern Isles). The union was created with the help of Scandinavian aristocracy wishing to counter the influence of the Hanseatic League. Margaret, a daughter of King Valdemar IV of Denmark, married King Haakon VI of Norway and Sweden. Her son, Olaf inherited the crown of Norway, but he died in 1387 without an heir. Margaret adopted her great-nephew Erik the same year. Erik was proclaimed King of Norway in 1389, and was elected King of Denmark and Sweden in 1396. His coronation was held in Kalmar on 17 June 1397. In 1523 Sweden rebelled and became independent and the union was dissolved. • ------------------------------------------ • Voice editing: Nicolae Bondar (myself) • Music: Houston Vibes Score, by Unicorn Heads, downloaded from YouTube Audio Library • Information Sources: • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanseat... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margare... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_of... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish... • We can stay in touch on Facebook: •   / historyclasspage   • You can support our channel here: •   / historyclass1   • For every video I try to use copyright free images.
