This date is a highlight of the French Revolution. Indeed, on that day, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille, a large fortress that was partly used to imprison political prisoners on orders of the king. Another reason behind the attack on the Bastille is simply that the people needed ammunition and powder, to begin what would become the French Revolution. The people of Paris seized the fortress after a siege of one day, before destroying it the very next day. The consequences of this day are very important because this is the first victory of the people against the French absolute monarchy. • The national holiday of “July 14” also commemorates a second date, less bloody this time... • More on www.frenchpossum.com • Images: • Par Celeste Hutchins from The Hague, Netherlands — Bastille Day 2, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par Jean-Pierre Houël — Bibliothèque nationale de France, Domaine public, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Domaine public, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par Beivushtang de en.wikipedia.org, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par I,, CC BY-SA 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par I, Jean Bart, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par Charles Thévenin — Travail personnel, O.Taris, Domaine public, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index... • Par Graveur; Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-1806?).
