Major causes include alcohol abuse and cystic fibrosis; however, it can be idiopathic. The symptoms consistent with chronic pancreatitis usually present with persistent abdominal pain or steatorrhea resulting from malabsorption of the fats in food. Significant weight loss often occurs due to malabsorption.
