Sweeney Todd is one of my favorite musicals of all time. It’s just such a good show with some fantastic music and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, excellent dark comedy, and legitimate horror. Honestly, as a baritone, Sweeney Todd himself is one of my all-time dream roles. So in celebration of the new Broadway revival with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, I figured I’d cover this song. In this song, after the lecherous Judge Turpin manages to escape his clutches, Sweeney Todd is fully consumed with rage, and vows to murder his future customers, believing that everyone deserves to die. The rich deserve it for their wickedness, and the poor deserve to be put out of their misery. It’s honestly fun to fully slip into his madness.
