In Othello Act IV, Scene iii, Desdemona speaks the following monologue: • My mother had a maid call’d Barbary; • She was in love, and he she lov’d prov’d mad, • And did forsake her. She had a song of “Willow,” • And old thing ’twas, but it express’d her fortune, • And she died singing it. That song tonight • Will not go from my mind, I have much to do • But to go hang my head all at one side • And sing it like poor Barbary. • A manuscript in the British Library, has a song for treble voice with lute accompaniment (written in tablature), which has a very similar text to the words Desdomona sings. It is plausible that the song pre-existed the play ( an old thing twas ), forming part of the rich 'folk' or popular music of the era (nowadays referred to as a 'ballad tune'). • http://www.shakespearedocumented.org/....
