Republic Day is the National Day of Turkey. • It commemorates the proclamation of the Turkish republic on October 29th 1923. • Following the defeat of the Ottomans in World War I, the allies occupied Turkey as part of the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire. • An uprising of Turkish nationalists led to the Turkish war of independence (1919 -1923). The allies left Turkish regions in July 1923. • Mustafa Kemal, the leader of the Turkish troops was named the first president on October 29th 1923 when the Turkish republic was proclaimed in the new capital, Ankara. • To celebrate Turkey's National Day, here are some interesting facts about Turkey. • The name 'Turkey' may come from 'Turchia', which is the word Italians used to refer to Anatolia—Turkey’s Asian region —as early as the 12th century. • The Turks didn’t use the name Türkiye (Land of the Turks) officially until the republic was established in 1923. • Istanbul is the only city to lie on two continents. The city is separated by the Bosporus strait. Overall, 95% of Turkey is in Asia, and 5% is in Europe. • The original name of Istanbul is Byzantium . The name Byzantium has Greek origins and refers to Byzas, the founder of the city. • In 324, it was renamed to “Constantinople”, and in 1930 it was changed to Istanbul. • Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, is said to be the world’s largest outdoor market, with 64 streets and over 4,000 shops. • The world’s oldest church, St. Peter’s Church, lies in Antioch, Turkey. • The first coins were used by Lydian King Alyattes in Sardis, in the Aegean region of Turkey, in 640 B.C. • 9,000 species of flowers exist in Turkey. There are only 11,500 species in all of Europe. • Tulips were introduced to Europe through Dutch traders by the Turks in the 17th century. The word “tulip” comes from the Turkish word for turban, tülbent. • Saint Nicholas, who inspired the story of Santa Claus, lived in Patara in Turkey. • Turkish Delight is one of the oldest sweets in world history, dating back 500 years. • Napoleon and Winston Churchill were particularly fond of Turkish Delight, and Picasso used to consume it daily while painting. • Jelly beans began as an American version of Turkish Delight. • The last meal on Noah’s ark, a pudding called “ashure” is still served as a dessert throughout Turkey. It supposedly contained 40 different ingredients, which were the remainders of his supplies. • By tradition, Noah's Ark landed on Mount Ararat. The mountain is a dormant volcano and the highest point in the country at 16,949 feet (5,166 m). • Turkey has 82,693 mosques, more than any other country per capita. • Turquoise means ‘Turkish stone’.
