For centuries it was common for people to believe in witches. Regular hunts and trials for them were organised across Europe and North America. Most were just ordinary people unjustly accused. But according to legend, a number of them were real witches caught up in the frenzy. • One of the most famous was Alice Kyteler, the first people in Ireland accused of witchcraft. Even bishops accused her of being evil, but she disappeared before anything could be done about it.
