Backlash trouble in your telescope mount? • In this video I will show you how to optimize the AZ/EQ-G's worm drives for smooth, backlash-free motion. We will walk through disassembling the mount and checking the roundness of the ring gears. From there I'll take you through cleaning and regreasing the worm gears, ring gears and clutches. Finally, I give an in-depth look at the mechanism for adjusting the mesh and explain how to use it to achieve optimal performance. • I just realized that in the part where I explain adjusting the worm block (15:30), I fail to mention that all 5 bolts need to be tightened down once you have it where you want it. That's the 4 on the back and the one used for adjusting on the top. Sorry 'bout that! 😳 • If you're thinking of giving this a go with your own mount, you will need the proper grease. Like a lot of people I grew up using white lithium grease for applications like this, but that is NOT correct. When I was researching for this project I found several articles cautioning against its use because it tends to separate. I can now confirm this through my own experience - I had used white lithium grease on a previous go-round and it did indeed separate and make a bit of a mess inside my mount. I was very lucky; it could have been much worse. Do yourself a favor and avoid this experience. • Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease (21030) • https://amzn.to/34DYclN • The link is for the 3oz tube. It comes in different sizes, but you can tell if it is the same stuff by the part number (21XXX). 3oz is most likely a lifetime supply for most people. At the time I purchased, it was the same price on Amazon as the 1/2 oz 🤷‍♂️ • Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Oil (51004) • https://amzn.to/36PWS0l • This also comes in different sizes, part numbers are (51XXX). 4oz is again a lifetime supply, you will literally need only two(ish) squirts of this. • Those are just plain Amazon links. I'm not affiliated in any way with these products, nor have I been paid to endorse them. • I truly hope this video helps someone achieve a more enjoyable experience with astronomy. When the equipment works properly it fades into the background of the experience, leaving just you and the stars. Some magic happens there. If this video gets anyone closer to that then I believe that will be an unqualified success! If you are such a person, please let me know in the comments; I'd love to hear from you!
