In today’s language challenge, we are comparing French and Romanian, two Romance languages belonging to the Indo-European language family. French (française) is a Romance language that descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French has evolved from Gallo-Romance, the spoken Latin in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Today, French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the word and a French-speaking person or nation is often referred to as Francophone in both English and French. French is an official language Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon, Guinea, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mali, Monaco, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Switzerland, Togo, and Vanuatu. French is spoken as a first language in many parts of the world outside of France, including the Canadian province of Quebec, and among large communities in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, and numerous other places including parts of the United States such as Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
