It’s Thursday, the 19th of September, and I’m at Shadwell. For some context, Shadwell (London Overground) station is located on the East London Line and was opened by the East London Railway in 1869. The line would run over the Thames Tunnel built by Marc and Ismbard Kingdom Brunel and would connect the Great Eastern Mainline to the Brighton Mainline. The line was built in stages, with the first section from Wapping to New Cross (LB SCR) opening in 1866 and the full line opening in 1869. New spurs were constructed connecting the ELL to the South London Line in 1871 and to the South Eastern Mainline in 1876. In the same year, services were extended to London Liverpool Street, with these trains being worked by the LB SCR. In 1884, a spur connecting the Inner Circle to the ELL would be opened, enabling Metropolitan Railway and Metropolitan District Railway services over the ELL. The ELR would become a joint company in 1882, with the route being jointly owned by six companies (LB SCR, SER, LCDR, MDR, MR GER). In 1913, the route would be electrified using the fourth rail 630V DC system used by the Metropolitan and District railways. Services over the inner circle were initially withdrawn following the electrification of the inner circle in 1905 and were reinstated in 1913. These services were finally withdrawn in 1941, and the passenger services were isolated from the rest of the network with only empty stock movements using the spur at Whitechapel. In 1990, the East London Line would become its own separate line on the Tube Map, as until that point it (along with the Hammersmith City Line) was shown as part of the Metropolitan line. The line would close on December 22nd, 2007 for conversion works to become part of the London Overground network. Under the East London Extension program, the line would reopen in stages starting on April 27th, 2010, with the full timetable being introduced on May 23rd. Eight months later, on February 24th, 2011, services would be extended to Highbury and Islington. Finally, in 2012, South London Line services from Clapham Junction (and Battersea Park) would begin to use the East London Line. For the Docklands Light Railway, the station is located on the old London Blackwall Railway line, which opened in 1840 with Shadwell St George’s East station opening with the line. The station would temporarily close during the First World War, reopening on May 5th, 1919. With the decline in passenger traffic, the station would permanently close in 1941. In the early 1980s, the Docklands Development Corporation was planning for a light metro system, ultimately becoming the Docklands Light Railway, a system that would use existing and new infrastructure. The new Shadwell station would be located 50 yards (45.72 meters) west of the original station and would be opened along with the rest of the system on August 31st, 1987. • RTT links: • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/serv... • Operator: London Overground (Arriva Rail London), Docklands Light Railway (KeolisAmey Docklands) C2C (Trenitalia UK) • Rolling Stock: Class 378 “Capitalstar”, B07, B2K, B92, B90, Class 720 “Aventra” Class 357 “Electrostar” • Timestamps: • 0:00 378151 (9E33 Dalston Junction to New Cross) • 1:00 378143 (9B33 Crystal Palace to Highbury Islington) • 1:36 378143 (9B33 Crystal Palace to Highbury Islington) 378145 (9G34 Dalston Junction to Clapham Junction) • 2:07 378 “Daks Hamilton” (9D33 West Croydon to Highbury Islington) • 2:29 720606 (1B56 London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness) • 2:42 B2K № 97 + B2K № 94 (Service to Beckton) • 3:13 B2K № 11 + B92 № 57 (Service to Woolwich Arsenal) • 3:28 357046 (2R98 London Fenchurch Street to Grays) • 3:36 B07 № 102 + B07 № 101 (Service to Bank) • 4:24 B2K № 11 + B92 № 57 (Service to Woolwich Arsenal) • 4:43 B07 № 102 + B07 № 101 (Service to Bank) • 4:58 B90 № 40 + B92 № 61 (Service to Tower Gateway) 357319 (East Ham E.M.U.D to London Fenchurch Street) • 5:26 378148 (9F34 New Cross to Dalston Junction) • 5:51 378148 (9F34 New Cross to Dalston Junction) 378215 (9E34 Dalston Junction to New Cross) • 6:27 378215 (9E34 Dalston Junction to New Cross) • 6:53 378141 (9B34 Crystal Palace to Highbury Islington) • 7:07 378144 (9A35 Highbury Islington to Crystal Palace) • 7:56 Outro
