Unlike other birds, female Kingfishers are actually more colorful than the males. The females have blue and orange colors with multiple bands/belts. Males only have one blue belt with no orange coloration. Kingfishers are very vocal in defending their territory. They will chase off other kingfishers that intrude on their stretch of water. When males are defending nesting sites, their average territory will reach 0.6 miles (1km) long. Kingfishers build their nests in tunnels in dirt banks along waterways. Some can reach up to 8ft (2.44 meters) long! Belted Kingfishers are very widespread and can be found across most of the US.
