The gardens at Benthall Hall in Shropshire would not be what they are today without the influence of botanist George Maw, who lived at the estate during the 19th century. • • One of his most important legacies is the collection of crocuses that continue to flower every winter. His passion for the plants can be seen in his book ‘Monograph of the Genus Crocus’, which was published in 1886 and features his own watercolours. • • In Maw’s time there were 12 gardeners working on the gardens, which are now looked after by the National Trust. Today they are cared for by head gardener, Nick Swankie and a team of volunteers. Watch this video for a tour of the rockery, the walled garden and botanic garden. • • The National Trust protects and cares for places so people and nature can thrive. Everyone can get involved, everyone can make a difference. Nature, beauty, history.
