In this video, I'll show you an experiment in search of a cheap alternative to a permanent mold for casting metals like aluminum, copper and bronze in a mini foundry. With this mold I expect to produce many copies of a trivet I have designed, without having to make an iron or graphite mold. • Other materials used for making molds, like ceramic plaster, green sands or lost wax, either they break up too easily, they must be destroyed or they produce too much wastes, bringing a cost a permanent mold does not have. However, an iron or graphite mold has a very high initial cost because it has to be machined, even if on the long run costs are diluted by the amount of copies you can make. • With this in mind I have thought of using a mixture of refractory cement, which is tougher and harder than plaster, together with silica sand, giving it further capacity to tolerate the high temperatures one has in copper and bronze foundry, and in that way being able to making more casts. • I did this before with refractory cement alone, using a very simple model, and got very good results, making over 10 copies in each mold. The current model is more complex, it has some very thin and delicate parts, which have been a challenge and have caused a few failures, but also has delivered lessons that will be useful to reach success. • In the second part of this video – which is on its way – I hope to show you successful results, or at least, those solutions that will help me achieve the successful results I expect. • The mixture is as follows: • Refractory cement (2 parts) • Silica sand – sugar particle size (1 part) • Water (Enough to reach a consistency similar to mortar) • The final video of this series can be found in:    • How To Make an Alternative Permanent ...   • Here I will show you the best option I have been able to find after all these experiments, with regards to a cheap alternative to a permanent mold for making many copies. • If you liked this video, please share it, give it thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe to this channel.
