Setsubun is an annual festival celebrated on February 3rd every year. The name literally means seasonal division and symbolizes the beginning of spring in Japan. It is accompanied by a special ritual called “mamemaki” or “bean throwing.” It is said that throwing the beans will cleanse the evil from the year before and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the New Year. Most Japanese eat “ehomaki,” which is a long rolled sushi that is said to bring good luck if you eat it the whole roll silently for Setsubun. • Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle • Website: https://www.seattle.us.emb-japan.go.j... • facebook: / japancons.seattle • instagram: / cgj_of_japan_in_seattle
