Vilnius is picture perfect in many ways, but how do the blind and partially sighted experience the magic of the city? If we challenge the sensory awareness we may sometimes take for granted and experience the city from the perspective of those who can’t see it the same way most of us do, what can we find? Here are some snapshots of how three residents of Vilnius – Irma, Ramunė and Alvydas – experience and connect with the city in their day-to-day lives. • 00:00 • A hazy image of a white mansion with a red roof. The sky is lightly clouded • and a few trees take shape in front of the building. Irma speaks. • She is 32 years old and has been blind since birth. • 00:16 • When she speaks, vague imagery of Vilnius is shown. • A white tower against the blue sky. A yellow, green, and red flag, the flag of Lithuania. • Historical buildings. Green dotted with white flowers. • Against a bright blue sky, white letters appear: • Vilnius presents. See Vilnius. But then See is crossed out • and the sentence changes to: • Experience Vilnius. • The next speaker is Alvydas. He is 60 years old and has been blind since birth. • Blurred pictures appear again. • Shadows pass over concrete tiles. Someone walks past a tree and buildings. Alvydas. • 00:21 • I am blind, I know the city the same way as other people, • as sighted people, but at the same time a bit differently. • 00:28 • I get a lot of information from the sounds around me. • 00:37 • The Cathedral bell tower is one such place. You're standing there • and the bell is ringing over your head and the sound goes through your whole body. • 00:44 • A blurred image of a wooden mansion. The next speaker is Ramuné, 43 years old, • who has had low vision since birth. The things she speaks about are shown as she sees it, • blurry and with dots of light. • 01:15 • The dots slowly disappear. Irma speaks again about her return from the nightclub. • Now she walks at night, past a blur of bright white dots of light. • Plants hang from awnings above terraces. • The rain patterns on the street and on the camera, • creating even more blurry images than before. • Slowly they pass beige statues embedded in walls. • Silhouettes of people walk over the wet ground • in front of a Greek-like building with pillars. • 01:43 • Ramunė starts to speak about her feelings and others join. When Alvydas talks, the biggest yard of Vilnius University appears, and the church of St. Johns is seen. • 02:05 • A big square surrounded by big historic buildings. • The setting sun paints the clouds in orange hues. • The images sharpen. A red-haired woman, Ramuné, sits behind a microphone. • Alvydas, a greying gentleman in a suit, follows. • And then Irma, with long curly blond hair. • 02:20 • On a bright red background, white letters appear Vilnius, unexpectedly amazing.
