UC Davis Aquaculture took a trip to Monterey Bay Seaweeds to visit with Dr. Michael Graham. We learned about sustainable algae mariculture practices a for an on land seaweed and kelp farm that sells fresh, raw seaweed. We got great underwater video of seaweed tumble culture: sea lettuce ( Ulva ), California nori ( Porphyra ), and dulse ( Palmeria ), and red sea grapes ( Botryocladia ). Monterey Bay Seaweeds was also growing kelp in tumble culture! We also got great underwater video of bullkelp ( Nereocystis ) and giant bladder kelp ( Macrocystis ). Monterey Bay Seaweeds is also involved in other low trophic aquaculture farming and participates in the endangered species conservation aquaculture of white abalone which are giant sea snails. We saw super cute baby abalone and inspected fish tanks with abalone and Ulva lactuca which some may refer to as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) !!!!! Dr. Graham is a professor at San Jose State University which is part of the California State University System (CSU) and is stationed at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory. • 0:00 Monterey Bay Seaweeds • 0:24 Sustainability • 1:00 Ulva lactuca, sea lettuce • 1:25 Moss Landing Marine Laboratories • 1:36 Bull kelp • 1:52 Dulse, Palmaria palmata • 2:02 Red abalone • 2:19 raw red sea grapes • 2:29 Dulse • 2:39 Bladder kelp • 2:56 Nori • 3:05 Black cod • http://www.montereybayseaweeds.com/ • aquaculture.ucdavis.edu
