Join me as I develop a Mac OS app in SwiftUI that automatically records my development progress. I walk through the unexpected challenges of transitioning from UIKit to AppKit, share insights on building cross-platform functionality, and demonstrate the app’s first version in action. This app, designed for ease of use, automatically records the active window, providing effortless screen recording for developers and QA professionals alike. Whether you’re looking to streamline your workflow or learn about SwiftUI development, this video offers practical tips and real-world coding experiences. • Watch me code this app LIVE: •    • LIVE Coding Session: Auto Screen Reco...   • Download Auto Screen Recorder on the Mac App Store: • https://apps.apple.com/app/auto-scree... • Apps by Adam Lyttle is the personal journey of an indie app developer, sharing valuable lessons and experiences to help fellow developers succeed in the competitive app market • My channel is based on one simple premise: A rising tide lifts all boats — I share my experience, teach what I've learned and highlight the mistakes I've made along the way. • Follow my journey here: • Website: https://adamlyttleapps.com • Twitter: https://x.com/adamlyttleapps • Github: https://github.com/adamlyttleapps • Instagram:   / adamlyttleapps   • TikTok:   / adamlyttleapps   • Substack: https://adamlyttleapps.substack.com • The Problem: Manual Screen Recording • Every time I create videos for my YouTube channel I find myself recording my entire screen for hours and then sifting through gigabytes of footage to extract the relevant parts. This process is tedious and time-consuming. I realized that instead of manually managing this I could create a program to automatically record the active simulator window, providing an archive of my development process without any user intervention. • The Solution: A SwiftUI Mac OS App • I set out to build a Mac OS app that detects when the simulator is the active window and starts recording it. The initial version worked seamlessly, archiving footage of my development progress with no manual input. This app, simple yet powerful, is incredibly useful for my regular job and QA roles, offering a hands-off approach to screen recording. • The App in Action • The first version of the app is straightforward but functional. It detects when specific applications, like ChatGPT, are active and starts recording their windows automatically, saving the videos to the desktop. This feature is invaluable for anyone needing to record screen activity without manual intervention. • Looking Ahead: Future Improvements • While the current version of the app serves its primary purpose, there are several areas for potential improvement. For instance, adding the ability to change the video save location or incorporating features from my other apps, like Screen Riz, which allows for background customization and transitions, could enhance the user experience. These features require further adaptation of my existing UIKit code to AppKit, a challenge I’m eager to tackle. • The Bigger Picture: The Value of Small Ideas • This project reminded me that even the smallest ideas can have significant value. Some of my simplest apps, like a squat counter, have proven unexpectedly popular, generating substantial revenue. This experience reinforced the importance of sharing and releasing projects, no matter how niche they may seem. What might start as a tool for personal use could meet a broader need in the market. • Conclusion: Embracing the Journey • The journey of building this Mac OS app in SwiftUI has been both challenging and rewarding. It underscored the importance of adaptability and the willingness to learn new frameworks. As I continue to refine this app and explore new ideas, I’m excited to share my experiences with you. Whether you’re a fellow developer or someone interested in the world of app development, I hope my journey inspires you to tackle your projects with curiosity and determination.
