This #HeritageMinute introduces the mill town of Paldi, BC, through the eyes of a Sikh woman, Bishan Kaur. • Join our mailing list: https://histori.ca/email • SUBSCRIBE to learn more about Canada: • https://histori.ca/youtube • Version française : • Minutes du patrimoine : Paldi • Punjabi version : • ਹੈਰੀਟੇਜ ਮਿਨਟ: ਪਾਲਦੀ • In 1927, Bishan Kaur left her home in Punjab, India to join her husband, the lumber entrepreneur Mayo Singh, in Canada. They helped shape the community of Paldi as a welcoming and inclusive home to people of all backgrounds. • Women like Bishan immigrated to Canada during an era of uncertainty for Asian Canadians. In the face of anti-Asian sentiments and policies, the Mayo Lumber Company was established by Sikh lumbermen in 1917 and employed South Asian, Chinese, Japanese, and white Canadian workers. The workers and their families called Paldi home until the 1980s. • Today, the historic site of the Paldi gurdwara remains a symbol of this inclusive, multicultural community. • FOLLOW US! • Instagram: / • Twitter: / historicacanada • TikTok: / historicacanada • Facebook: / • Pinterest: https://pinterest.ca/historicac/_saved/ • • For more information about Paldi: • https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.c... • https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.c... • More educational content at: • historicacanada.ca • thecanadianencyclopedia.ca • Credits: • Bishan Kaur – Mannu Sandhu • Mayo Singh/End Narrator – Tarun Keram • Konme – Ashley Kobayashi • Directors – Hayley Gray and Anaïsa Visser • Director of Photography – Naim Sutherland • Editor – Jasleen Kaur • Composer – Bhaveek Makan (Skinny Local) • Written by – Hayley Gray and Anaïsa Visser • Producers – Elad Tzadok and Hayley Gray • Produced By Scopitone Films
