Colorados new wolf pack being relocated

There’s been an unexpected twist with Colorado’s new wolves. All six animals from the brand new Copper Creek wolf pack were captured and taken to a secure and undisclosed location for evaluation and monitoring by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. • This comes after state wildlife officials announced the pack would be removed due to repeated attacks on livestock in the area. • Sadly, the adult male wolf died a couple days after being captured. He had several injuries to his right hind leg, which occurred somehow before he was caught. Antibiotics were administered to treat infections but to no avail. A full necropsy is planned. The adult female wolf and four pups are healthy, although the pups were reported to be a little underweight. • The ultimate plan is to re-release the pack once an appropriate location is determined. The Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan states wolves will not be relocated into the wild if they have depredation histories. • “The plan also calls for flexibility,” said CPW Director Jeff Davis, “and it may not at times account for every unique situation the agency and our experts encounter. This spring, after a pair of wolves established a den in Middle Park, the male adult wolf was involved in multiple depredations. Removing the male at that time, while he was the sole source of food and the female was denning, would likely have been fatal to the pups and counter to the restoration mandate.” • CPW biologists point out that the pups are still reliant on adults for food and there’s no evidence that they hunted any livestock.
