In this video, I chronicle my progression from being a healthy 25 year old to having to move back in with my mom so she could be my full-time caretaker. My symptoms began with excruciating pain in the soles of my feet that spread to the rest of my body. This was accompanied by new sensitivities to both food and medicine. • While one doctor diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and another told me it was all in my head, mostly, doctors didn’t have answers for me. The fibromyalgia diagnosis didn’t really make sense in the context of my severe reactions to food and medicine. Finally, a doctor diagnosed me with two strains of bacteria called Bartonella: Bartonella Henselae and Bartonella Quintana. Bartonella is mostly known as Cat Scratch Disease, but this is a bit of a misnomer because you can get it from fleas, sandflies, and other vectors. However, if you search the literature, you will find that there are many cases of “atypical” Bartonella infections that manifest with rheumatological or neurological symptoms like fatigue, headaches, joint pain, numbness and tingling, disorientation, and encephalitis. Some people experience psychiatric issues like irritability, panic attacks, depression, and hallucinations. • My unexplained food and medicine sensitivities were due to mast cell activation. Mast cells are an important part of the immune system and can get out of whack with a prolonged infection and start reacting to things that they shouldn’t be. Mast cell activation is hard to control but antihistamines and a low histamine diet can help. • Treatment for Bartonella involves many months on a combination of antibiotics. Some people use more out-of-the-box treatments such as supplements, herbs, and homeopathic treatments. • I want this channel to help raise awareness about atypical Bartonella infections and for it to be a place where people with Bartonella can learn about tests, treatment, hurdles, and to connect with other people with this disease. Bartonella is most known in the Lyme community and I want to take Bartonella out from underneath that umbrella so it can have its own recognition. My videos often take a humorous tone in order to bring levity to an otherwise serious topic.
