Interview with a real Highwayman. Part 1 of 6 • The introduction Grant 'John' Cadoret has been walking Australia's highways for more than 40 years. • Doesn't collect any money from the government • He's a real life Swagman. • John has been walking since 1977, and says he just decided to pack up one day and hit the road. • I took a three month holiday, and then I just kept going, not deciding what to do, he says. • I looked around and I though 'this is okay' and so I kept going. • John aims to cover about 10 or 15 kilometres a day, finding makeshift camps wherever he can. • I just try and do a little bit each day, he says. • John stops once a year or so to see his family in Ballarat and the Wimmera, but for the most part, concedes it's a solitary life. • But online, it seems he has a strong support base keeping track of his journeys. • Thousands of people have taken to Facebook pages to record his location, and share updates and news on his travels. • On the road though, John's only been alerted to the attention when people stop to give him food or a drink, or to snap a selfie with him. • They stop and give me a snack and the word's out that I like my Coke, so they give me Coke. • At the age of 63, John says he has no desire to slow down and stay in one place. • I just like it, he says. • I tend to give the road a little bit of respect and the wildlife's not too bad. • I see the world changing as I walk past. • / grantjohnhelpinghands
