The Fiat Lingotto motor factory, envisioned by its leader Giovanni Agnelli and designed by the architect Giacomo Matté-Trucco, was unlike any other automobile factory to date. It had five floors, with raw materials going in at the ground floor, and cars built on a line that went up through the building. This resulted in a more efficient use of space, as the factory could produce more cars per square foot than traditional factories. Finished cars emerged at rooftop level to go onto the 1.5km long test track. This allowed for more thorough testing of each car before it left the factory, ensuring that each car was of the highest quality. The track was so unusual that it was even featured in the 1969 movie “The Italian Job”. The Lingotto factory produced 80 different models of cars, putting out an average of 200 daily from its opening until the late 70s. The last car, a Lancia Delta, rolled out of the factory in 1979. Three years later, the factory was officially closed. The Lingotto building was eventually converted into a modern complex with concert halls, a theatre, a convention center, shopping arcades, and a hotel. The rooftop test track was transformed into a modern rooftop garden called “La Pista 500”, which contains over 40,000 indigenous plants and is comprised of 28 green islands spread across the test track. • #history #automobile #fiat • Music: AleXZavesa - Cinematic Dramatic: https://pixabay.com/music/main-title-...
