Challenge is universal, what we do about it is our choice. Using her experiences as a backdrop, Dr. Ellison discusses fundamental concepts of hope and its role in our lives. • Brooke Ellison is an Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University, and Director of Education and Ethics at the Stony Brook Stem Cell Facility. Brooke’s research focuses on the ethics and social justice questions of science and medicine. As a faculty member at Stony Brook University, Brooke cofounded the organization, VENTure Think Tank, to provide policy and technological solutions for ventilator users, and the Center for Community Engagement and Leadership Development, to empower underserved communities.At 11, Brooke was left paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator. Despite this, Brooke received her undergraduate and masters degrees from Harvard University, and PhD from Stony Brook University. In 2002, Brooke published a memoir, Miracles Happen, which was made into a movie, The Brooke Ellison Story, directed by Christopher Reeve. In 2014, Brooke was selected by the World Economic Forum to be a Young Global Leader, to solve help make create a better world. • This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
