Greetings from sunny South Africa! In this week’s video we are giving our TIPS For Visiting NAMAQUALAND | The Land of Wildflowers and Happiness 🌼 • Check out some of our other videos from this epic road trip around South Africa :) • Meerkat Mania In The Kalahari Desert • Meerkat Mania In The Kalahari Desert • Augrabies Is A Hidden Gem • Augrabies Is A Hidden Gem!! • Namaqua National Park is a South African national park situated approximately 495 km north of Cape Town and 21 km northwest of Kamieskroon. It has an area of more than 1300 km². The park is part of Namaqualand, an area covering 55,000 km² located within the semi-desert Succulent Karoo biome. • The Namaqualand Flower Route lies roughly 5 hours north of Cape Town. You can already see evidence of flowers even in Cape Town, and Postberg, a small section of the West Coast National Park close to Langebaan, but the real flower show belongs to a series of drives that centre on the towns of Garies, Springbok, Kamieskroon and Port Nolloth, way up the N7. • The display of flowers is a highly volatile exhibition with almost 4,000 different species of plant seeds lie awaiting germination that depends entirely on what the weather is doing. Thus every year between July and October brings a different formula, and a different selection of flowers. It’s a good idea to stop is at the local tourist information bureau to find out where that year's best flower displays are. • The driving route through the park is a 4.3km circular route that starts and ends at the reception. Dotted along the route are a number of clearly marked lookout points giving you a better perspective of the landscape. In addition there is also 21km 4x4 trail available, giving you greater access to the park and more opportunities to view the spectacular flowers and wildlife. For those looking to walk through the flowers there are two hiking trails available. These trails ensure that you can walk through the flowers without harming the flowers and environment. • Because the flowers follow the sun, the best way to make sure that you see them is to drive with the sun behind you or drive as far north as you can and slowly make your way back to Cape Town. An interesting fact to take note of when going looking for flowers is that they can be rather temperamental. The flowers are late sleepers and only fully open their petals with the warmth of the late morning sun. If the weather is particularly cold and overcast, they may not open their petals at all. The best time of day to view the flowers is from 10:30-11am and 4.00pm in the afternoon. As the sun sets the flowers close their petals for the night. • In addition to the viewing of incredibly beautiful wildflowers, travellers are drawn from around the world to appreciate the incredible wildlife, stargazing and birding. More active travellers can get their adrenalin fix in with a number of activities including mountain biking, hiking, diving, surfing and many more. • We stayed at a campsite in the flowery town of Kamieskroon just 21km drive from the Skilpad entrance to the Park. The Kamieskroon locals need not travel to the park as the wildflowers also flourish in their back gardens and all through the town giving them a stunning display each year. • Here are some of the plant species you can expect to find in the park: • Boesmankers • Bandaged Vinger • And our favourite, Kukumakranka • Our tips for visiting this region: • ◾Do a bit of research into the various hotspots for flower viewing. • ◾ There are plenty of other exciting activities to do in this area aside from viewing the stunning flowers such as mountain biking, hiking, diving, surfing and many more :) • ◾Enjoy this beautiful and serene area!
