Welcome to a day at the foundry with me. I wanted to give you a brief summarized visual description of the casting process. A sculpture can take up to a year to be completed so many steps are not covered here. Basically, it starts with the original sculpture from which a silicone negative mold is made. With the silicone mold we make a wax positive which is then covered inside and out by a ceramic shell which is baked in the oven. The wax melts and the space left by the melted wax is replaced by liquid bronze which was melted at 1200°. Then the ceramic shell is broken and the bronze is revealed, after which it is cleaned assembled, patinated and mounted on a base if necessary.
