While tummy time has amazing benefits for your baby’s development, don’t underestimate the power of side lying. It’s a fantastic position for baby with many developmental benefits. From a sensory perspective, baby begins to learn about the sides of their body which will eventually support rolling and transition to sit. This position also helps to develop head and neck control. Playing or resting and digesting in side lying can reduce the time on the back therefore helping keep that nice shape of the head, especially if baby is sleeping on their back for long periods at night. The stomach has a unique shape to it, and side lying on baby’s left side can also help with digestion and help baby burp after a full meal. • Remember that you shouldn’t expect your baby to stay on their side and have them just lie there indefinitely! Gravity and the muscle activity activity they are engaged in will eventually pull them forward or backwards. You can use a towel roll along the back, or you can use your arm or your leg as well. Make sure to have something engaging for them to look at. Your face is always preferred as you talk to them about the world around them. They love faces! Books, toys, or anything you have on hand can get them engaged. Don’t set a specific time limit or goal for baby to reach. Read their cues. Some days they will want to do more and some days less. And they have two sides! Make sure they are getting equal time in both. Eventually they will learn to roll in both directions from this position which is great practice when they are on either their back or belly. • #sidelying #sidelyingbenefits #tummytime #tummytimefun #tummytimeactivities #newbornbaby #babyexercise #floortime #playtime #babyplay #babyplayideas
