The smooth vortex rolls up at the beginning. Due to the instability taking place at the vortex (similar as vortex ring), the smooth (ring) vortex transitions into a turbulent wake. Removing the background helps to reveal the wake structures. The images are finally shifted so that the falling ball appears at a fixed location.
