Mayapuri Industrial Incident What Connects Cobalt 60 amp Delhi University

We will look into the reasons behind the Mayapuri Industrial Accident which resulted in the death of 1 person. This was a traumatic event that has caused widespread radiation exposures in the surrounding area. Mayapuri which is an industrial locality which is known for its metal recycling and scrapping business. Hundreds of small as well as big shops exist in Mayapuri which engage in the metal recycling and scrap goods business so much so that Mayapuri is considered the junk metal capital of India and even giant containers of scrap are imported here from across the world. • In 1969, a Department from the Delhi University purchased one such Gamma Cell from a Canadian company called Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive element which is used in Gamma Cell. The improper disposal of the Cobalt 60 from the Gamma Cell led to the accident.
