The air cell at the large end of the egg gets larger and the embryo breaks through a membrane to enter that air cell. At this point we may hear the hatching chick vocalize Then within about 48 hours the chick breaks the egg shell (pip) with the egg tooth. Within the next 48 hours, the chick will have rotated within the egg (counter- clockwise) to break the shell and push the top off. This is called breakup. Young are born with an internal food source called a yolk sac that acts like a supplement to feed the chicks. Once hatched the owlets grow very rapidly. First feeding will often not occur for many hours, but once the hatchling can hold it's head up and beg, the parent will start to feed. It will definitely be easy to see her eggs begin process. Pips, cracks, etcetera. Maybe this weekend first one will hatch. Getting so excited. Full all my favorite nest. She is most recognizable by the continuous squawking noise, I want to say she is calling for Dobby but not sure about that. • Dobby has is lighter all around and has skinner legs. He is pretty quiet unless he is first in the box and then his screams will overwhelm the microphone. Last year they had 8 eggs, 6 hatched and 3 fledged. • When Dobby lands on the camera it shakes the view of the door. • General Remarks and Notes: • Box about 16' off the ground • Box is 2' x 2' x 2', homemade, mounted November 2022 • 6 mouse hold with ladder board 10 above the floor and outside • Use a Hikvision 8 mp camera • Walls are compressed bark and produced for reptile enclosures • Last year the bedding was ground wood from an Ash tree and this year I used rabbit bedding from a feed store which is too light. Next year I will bark, but looking for suggestions.
