Get up close to a pair of Pearl River map turtles at the Tennessee Aquarium. As the name implies, this turtle is native to the Pearl River system. This species, Graptemys pearlensis, was scientifically described in 2010 and the Tennessee Aquarium is the first institution to display it. It was split from Graptemys gibbonsi, based on shell shape, color patterns, genetics and river drainage. Currently G. gibbonsi is considered a Pascagoula River drainage species and G. pearlensis is only found in the Pearl River system. This type of distinction is important when managing small populations of rare animals so that healthy genetic diversity is maintained, especially when conservation efforts include captive breeding and release programs. Although these species are not yet considered Threatened or Endangered by the federal government, IUCN does label both as Lower Risk/Near Threatened. This means that they are in need of management so that populations do not continue to decline. Visit our website at:http://www.tnaqua.org/Home.aspx
