Viele Karnivoren mit Grubenfallen fluoreszieren bläulich unter UV-Licht. Bei Sarracenia ist es wohl das im Nektar enthaltene Schierlingsgift Coniin, was bei Brocchinia und Nepenthes fluoresziert ist nicht bekannt. Ob die Fluoreszenz dem Fangerfolg der Pflanzen dient oder nicht sei dahingestellt, es sieht jedenfalls beeindruckend aus im Gewächshaus. Besonderer Dank geht an Richard Bayerl (Stuttgart), der seine UV-Lampe zur Verfügung stellte und auch persönlich an den Experimenten teilnahm. In Sarracenia it is most likely the toxin of the Poison Hemlock: coniine. The fluorescent agent in Brocchinia and Nepenthes is unknown. Whatever relevant the effect is for successful prey capture, it is impressive to experience it in the greenhouse.
